The 11th Kagyu Monlam Indonesia 2019
The 11th Kagyu Monlam Indonesia was successfully accomplished at the end of April 2019. Buddhists in Indonesia had the opportunity to recite praises and aspiration prayers from the Kagyu Monlam prayer book. The Monlam was held at the Lumbini Field; Taman Wisata Candi, Borobudur complex, Central Java Borobudur-Magelang, April 28th-30th 2019, with Dolpo Shelri Choktrul Rinpoche presiding.
This is the eleventh time that Kagyu Monlam has been held in Indonesia. It is organized by the Triyana Dharma Center (Surabaya) and Erdi Karma Kagyu Center (Jakarta) , which is the official representative of the Karma Kagyu lineage of Vajrayana Buddhism in Indonesia.
At least 115 peoples from both domestic and foreign countries (Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia) and 79 Sangha members attended the series of prayers and processions which were held for 3 days at the Monlam Pavilion in the Lumbini field, Borobudur Temple.
Events began with a Sangha procession bearing images of the highest leaders of the Karma Kagyu lineage, and a portrait of His Holiness the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa was unveiled on the Dharma throne at the Monlam Pavilion. After a series of mandala offerings and short prayers, the Sangha and devotees took the Sojong vow as a determination to carry out the 8 precepts with the special support of the sacred environs of the ancient Borobudur temple location, making the sojong practice in the Indonesian Kagyu Monlam activities more meaningful. After a series of prayers to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas and breakfast at the Monlam Pavilion, the 11th Kagyu Monlam program which took the theme of Prayer for World Peace and Happiness for All Beings was officially opened by the Head of Borobudur Temple Tourism Unit, I Gusti Putu Ngurah Sedana, who then gave food to 10 residents around the underdeveloped Borobudur temple, released birds and planted a Bodhi tree in the Borobudur area, accompanied by Dolpo Selri Choktrul Rinpoche and several Sangha members.
On the second day, the Sangha and the people had the opportunity to carry out the Tripitaka Procession by carrying the book of Tripitaka on their left shoulder clockwise around the Borobudur temple as a form of respect to the Dharma. After returning to the Monlam Pavilion, the Tripitaka texts were read by the Sangha as a form of reciting the teachings of the Buddha.
On the third day, the people had the opportunity to pay homage and join the alms procession to the 16 Arhats. This procession, aside from being a way of accumulating merit, presents offerings to the Sangha (represented by the 16 Arhats) and displays reverence for and remembrance of the virtuous activities and qualities of the 16 Arhats that contributed to the spread of the Dharma in the ten directions.
The program of Dharma activities at the Kagyu Monlam is very diverse. In addition to offering praise and aspiration prayers, participants can also give offerings to the Sangha in the Mandala Offering activities, dedicate virtue to the ancestors in the activities of Chaudu Puja, circumambulate the Borobudur Temple as a way of accumulating virtue, plant trees as a form of environmental support, release living beings (fish and birds) and visit an orphanage as a form of compassion and various other positive activities.
At the end of the event and in closing the series of wholesome activities for 3 days, the whole Sangha and the participants sang the Lamp Prayer of hope dedicated to the happiness of all beings.

Ven. Anzin Rinpoche presided over the Monlam, bestowing a Two-Armed Chenrezig empowerment and giving teachings. More than two hundred Sangha members participated. They came from America, Canada, Malaysia, Taiwan, Nepal, Bhutan, Singapore, etc. Many Sangha members from Mainland China also joined in, which made the event particularly auspicious.
As the Monlam drew to a close, all the participants waved their katas and chanted the prayer of auspiciousness, which created a wonderful atmosphere enjoyed by all present. During the Marme Monlam, a group of children led the song “The Melody of Buddha Jewel”, and all the volunteers performed “A Song of Aspiration”. Artists came together to sing “Heart Sutra”, and invited the audience, including a monk, to sing together the pop song “Friend” which brought much excitement and joy to all.
All participants in the Monlam one-pointedly focused on reciting the prayers, accumulating mantras and making aspirations. By doing so, we believe that their wisdom and merits will increase, which will certainly lead to Buddhahood in future.
There were several special features of the Hong Kong Kagyu Monlam this year:
➢ Lamp Offering in Hong Kong duplicated in India: During the Kagyu Monlam, if one offered a lamp in Hong Kong, a second lamp was offered for him or her in the Holy land of Bodhgaya, India which lasted for four days. We believe that this way of offering lamps brings more auspiciousness and accumulates more merit.
➢ Contribution to Environmental Protection: In order to reduce pollution and protect the environment, a water dispenser was installed at the venue, which led to a significant decrease in the number of plastic cups used by participants.
➢ Free Monlam Breakfast and Lunch: Every morning, the “Monlam Breakfast Bread” was distributed for free to each Sangha member and lay devotee. At noon, approximately 150 sangha members received the offering of lunch in a vegetarian restaurant, and a vegetarian buffet was prepared for 120 sangha members as well as volunteers.
➢ Special Timing: This year’s Monlam in Hong Kong was rescheduled to take place in May when the weather is milder Also, this is an auspicious month in mainland China because the celebration of the Buddha’s Birthday on the 8th day of the 4th lunar month takes place.
➢ Mothers’ Day : The Monlam concluded on Mother’s Day, in the hope that lay participants would bring their mothers and other mother sentient beings to participate and receive the blessings and merit of making offerings to the 16 Arhats and participating in the dedication prayers for the living and the dead .

This was the first of the International Kagyu Monlams to be held this year and, as is the tradition, followed the pattern of the Kagyu Monlam Chenmo which is held every year in Bodh Gaya.
The Indonesian Kagyu Monlam was held at the ancient Borobudur Temple complex from 22-24 April 2017 and was the 9th Kagyu Monlam to be organized by Sangha and lay people in Indonesia. Trulku Rinjung Rinpoche presided, and the event was attended by 79 monks and nuns as well as 157 laypeople, from Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong.
The first day began at 4.30 am with a procession of His Holiness the 17th Karmapa’s photo, which was placed on the Dharma throne. The prayers opened with the Riwo Shangcho puja and Sojong vows. Before bestowing these vows, Trulku Rinjung Rinpoche gave a brief overview of their meaning and the benefits of taking them. There was a short break for breakfast and then the recitation of the Monlam prayers continued.
At 10.00am the official opening ceremony began. It was attended by the officials of the Taman Wisata Borobudur and the conservation center of Borobudur Temple. The Guests of Honour received souvenirs, and there was a food offering for the local poor. The opening ceremony concluded with a spectacular release of birds and the planting of a Bodhi tree in the environs of world-famous Borobudur temple. The recitation of Monlam prayers continued after lunch and the day concluded with the Mahakala puja and Surchod puja.
On the second day, prayers started at 5.00am with the Riwo Sangchod puja and Sojong vows. After the Monlam 20-branch offering, the Sangha and selected participants processed around the Borobudur Temple respectfully holding aloft the Kangyur and Tengyur. First came the gyalin, and then Trulku Rinjung Rinpoche followed by Sangha members and white-clothed lay people, singing the praises of the Three Jewels. Then the sponsors offered mandala offerings and the Sangha recited the Kangyur and Tengyur scriptures. During the lunchbreak, some of the Sangha and lay people participated in a tree planting, part of a reforestation project, in the Lumbini Field area of the Borobudur complex.
The afternoon session continued with puja dedication for the deceased.
On the third day, after the morning puja and before the breakfast, there was a photo session for everyone, against the background of the ancient Borobudur Temple. The morning session included a Procession of the 16 Arhats, with Sangha members, dressed as the Arhats, wearing masks and carrying their specific attributes. The Sponsor Appreciation took place after lunch, accompanied by a distribution of food aid to an orphanage near Borobudur.
The grand finale of the 9th Indonesian Kagyu Monlam was held in the early evening with a lamp puja (Marme Monlam) and pradaksina and recitation of the Karmapa Khenno mantra around the Borobudur Temple.
The following videos of the 9th Indonesian Kagyu Monlam are available on YouTube:
13th Taiwan Kagyu Monlam 2016
Due to the inspiration and blessings of His Holiness the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa, the 13th Taiwan Kagyu Monlam was successfully completed at the Chieftain Youth Activity Center in Taipei. This year’s principal organizer was Khenchen Tsulnam Rinpoche and his three Palriling Dharma Centers of Taiwan. They invited Khenchen Lodro Donyo Rinpoche of Bokar Monastery to preside over the Monlam. Khenchen Rinpoche graciously accepted the invitation and bestowed teachings each morning on glorious Atisha’s Lamp of the Path to Enlightenment. His joy in presenting the Dharma and his depth of learning were deeply appreciated by all.
The preparations by Khenchen Tsulnam Rinpoche and his three Palriling centers in Taiwan have been wonderful, and the event ran very smoothly. Lama Karma Chodrak—the Chief Executiveer of Kagyu Monlam International was present for the entire three days and provided guidance and support. Many participants commented on how touched they were by this year’s Monlam experience. The prayer festival was attended by over 1,200 participants from fourteen different countries of the East and West.
The virtue of the Taiwan Kagyu Monlam is dedicated to the present and future benefit of all beings, the flourishing of the Buddhadharma, and the long life of His Holiness the Gyalwang Karmapa and all genuine masters.
